Tony Awards Nominations 2016: Hamilton is Non-Stop

Editor

The nominations were announced today for the Tony Awards and with a record-breaking 16 nominations, we’re not surprised to see that history has its eyes on Hamilton this year.

Topping The Producers (2001) and Billy Elliot‘s (2009) previous records of 15 nods each, Hamilton received nominations for Best Musical, Book, Original Score, Orchestrations, Direction, Choreography, Costume Design, Scenic Design, and Lighting Design, as well as multiple acting nods for Leading Roles (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo) and Featured Roles (Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Renée Elise Goldsberry).

Up for Best Musical this year alongside Hamilton are Bright Star, Waitress, and Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and all that Followed which was recently decided to be a new musical instead of a revival. Best Revival of a Musical has several strong contenders this year including The Color Purple, Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, and Deaf West’s revival of Spring Awakening.

Shuffle Along earned the second highest number of nominations with 10, She Loves Me followed with 8, and Long Day’s Journey into Night landed 7 nominations. As for some of those largely left out of the field, there were no nominations for Allegiance and only a handful for shows like American Psycho. Disaster! received just one nomination, Actress in a Featured Role for Jennifer Simard. Several hours after the announcements, producers revealed Disaster! will close on Sunday. Other surprising snubs included Audra McDonald’s performance in Shuffle Along and Spencer Liff’s groundbreaking choreography for the Spring Awakening revival.

New play nominees are Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed, Florian Zeller’s The Father, Steven Karam’s The Humans, and Mike Barlett’s King Charles III. Best Revival of a Play nominees are David Harrower’s Blackbird, Michael Frayn’s Noises Off, Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night and two plays by Arthur Miller, The Crucible and A View From the Bridge.
