Telltale Games announced back in April that they would be releasing a Game of Thrones title before the end of this year. After months of fan speculation and resounding silence from the development company about the project, Telltale has released some concrete details about the upcoming game.
This game series will tell the story of House Forrester. (Although the house is not included in HBO’s Game of Thrones, they are a canon part of the A Song of Ice and Fire books, appearing in A Dance with Dragons.) Telltale’s official release gives a rich and intense overview of the game’s central house:
House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering ironwood trees. Built over fifteen hundred years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons, Ironrath is a testament to the strength and endurance of Ironwood. The Forrester house words are ‘Iron from Ice’, which echoes their belief that – like the ironwood itself – the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.
The game will feature five playable characters, as rumored. They will all either be members of House Forrester, or people of service to the house. These point of view changes, previously absent from other Telltale Games like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, are meant to more fully reflect the massive scope of the Game of Thrones universe. Playing as multiple characters also makes Telltale’s decision-based game model even more complex, as decisions made as one character will affect not only their storyline, but those of all of the other characters as well.
Although House Forrester hails from the books, Telltale’s game will match up very well with the tv series. Game events will begin around the end of Season 3 and end right before the beginning of Season 5. Players will visit familiar locations like King’s Landing and The Wall, but will also have the opportunity to see new locations, like Ironrath, House Forrester’s home.
The game will have six episodes, released individually over a period of time. The first episode is called “Iron from Ice.” Although there is still no set release date, Telltale has stated that the first episode will release before the end of this year, which hopefully means it’s just around the corner.
