Star Wars Episode IX may be a few years out, but that doesn’t mean director Colin Trevorrow isn’t working hard on planning the conclusion to the epic new trilogy. He’s been working closely with both J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson to make sure his ideas gel perfectly with what they have in store.
While talking to HeyUGuys, the director mentioned that a big part of what he’s been working on includes answering the many mysteries set up in The Force Awakens, the biggest one being Rey’s parents.
“We’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying,” he said. “She deserves it.”
She certainly does. Rey has quickly become a fandom favorite, and no one managed to leave the cinema without pondering the question of her parentage. While the most obvious answer seems to be Luke Skywalker at this time, most internet theorists aren’t so sure. Could Rey be a Kenobi? Could she somehow be Han and Leia’s? Could she just be some ordinary human with no distinct jedi parentage that we know of? Only time will tell.
Trevorrow also hopes to find new places to take the members of the original cast: ”They are icons, but they’re also people that have suffered tremendous loss and challenge over the course of all these films.” It will certainly be a challenge to conclude stories that began nearly 40 years ago in a way that will leave fans satisfied and do justice to the characters.
Star Wars Episode IX will be released on May 24, 2019.
