WARNING: Potential spoilers ahead if you’re unfamiliar with the canon of Sherlock Holmes and/or haven’t somehow managed to catch Season 2.
The darling Benedict Cumberbatch and the adorable Martin Freeman will begin filming the third series of Sherlock in “early 2013.” The announcement came from Beryl Vertue, executive producer of the series, at the Nations and Regions Media conference in Salford, England today.
For Americans, this is awesome news, though we haven’t officially been party to Season Two just yet. We’ll get it on PBS in May, so our wait will be siginificantly shorter than our fans across the pond. My warmest thoughts go out to my English and European fans clamoring for more Cumberbuns.
SPOILER: Season 2 ended with the contemporized events of “The Final Problem.” As such, Season 3 will likely start out dealing with the issue Doyle had to deal with when the crazy early 20th century fans basically rose in revolt against the author and his decisions. Think Harry/Hermione shippers in top hats and tails or corsets and bustles harumphing all over industrial-era London. END SPOILER.
So why the wait? Well it’s hard to imagine the stars are just bored in their flats playing cards. Cumberbatch is currently filming the next installment to Star Trek, and Martin Freeman will likely be spending his year on junket duty for The Hobbit. Both of which I’m sure we’ll be covering.
So what do you think? Is this too long to wait, or are you excited to have plenty of time to plan your re-watching parties? Let us know in the comments!
