The Fault in Our Stars Cast Profile: Shailene Woodley

Earlier today, our speculation that actress Shailene Woodley had been cast as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the upcoming film adaptation of John Green’s novel, The Fault in Our Stars was confirmed.

Based on comments after the announcement from producer Wyck Godfrey, director Josh Boone, and of course author John Green, we can trust that Hazel Grace is in capable hands. For those unfamiliar with Shailene Woodley’s previous work, we’ve put together a few highlights from her impressive resume.

As a child actor, Woodley had minor roles in series such as The District, Without a Trace, and Everybody Loves Raymond. Her first more visible role was in 2003 as Kaitlin Cooper, Marissa’s younger sister on The O.C. A pony loving mini-me of her mom, Julie, she was a delight.

Woodley’s next major role was in 2008 as the lead in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Her character, Amy, dealt with the balance of teen pregnancy, family, relationships, and high school for five seasons on ABC Family.

What many consider to be Woodley’s breakout role came in 2011′s The Descendants, in which she starred as George Clooney’s daughter. The critically acclaimed film was based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings and Woodley’s portrayal of Alex King earned her several nominations and awards, including an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female and an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance.

Woodley’s first post-Secret Life project was also her second film adaptation of a book, The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp. The film won her the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.

Before signing on for TFiOS, she has begun work on few other as yet unreleased films as well. In the independent film White Bird in a Blizzard she’ll share the screen with some familiar faces, including Angela Bassett, Precious‘ Gabourey Sidibe and Glee‘s Jacob Artist. Woodley is also set to play Tris in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novel, Divergent, along side the recently cast Theo James.

In addition to her plentiful experience with film adaptations of novels, fans of Hazel should also be happy to know Woodley will be quite familiar with the attention and care required to take on another already beloved character, as she conquers the role of Mary Jane Watson in next year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
