Let me preface by saying this: until we hear from the studio or someone affiliated with the studio directly, we can’t really confirm this. Now with that out of the way… we’re pretty damn sure the children of a certain villain mutant that can’t be named because of licensing deals that keep the character firmly set in the Fox camp for the foreseeable future will be joining Cap and the rest for Avengers 2.
Wanda and Pietro Maximoff – better known as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver – are reportedly bringing a mutant touch to Avengers 2. Whether or not they can be called mutants is still unknown – again, that licensing deal – but all signs point to the inclusion of this brother-sister act. In fact, that’s exactly how Joss phrased his hinted addition when on the red carpet for Iron Man 3. From Blastr.com:
“I have finished a draft and I’m redoing it now. I think it’s in really good shape. We’re in a very good place … I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.”
Off the top of my head, there are only so many sibling duos possible in the existing Marvel Universe for him to use. As a long-time fan and faithful adapter of the medium, it seems highly unlikely that he would create such a team for the film. They’d clearly be an analog for the fan favorite, and we all know it wouldn’t go over well. So now, Blastr (via EW), is reporting the following:
“Some online rumors turn out to be true, however. A source confirms to EW that the twin characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers 2, which Whedon hinted at recently when he said he was writing a brother-sister duo into the movie. Feige maintains a poker face on that scoop, saying only: ‘I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now.’”
Sure it could. Whedon’s first draft of the original Avengers script included Ant-Man and Wasp, with the former getting his own movie and the latter likely being introduced in that film (she’s his wife).
If it’s true, awesome. We’ll update when there’s solid confirmation. But what could this mean? Well, Spider-Man and Wolverine have both been members of the superhero team. As have Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Black Panther, and Vision. Hell, the whole of the Fantastic Four were on the roster for a time. We could see Marvel/Disney blowing this open wide. I’m no expert on licensing deals, but surely there will come a point where Fox realizes that it can make money through Disney without having to do any work. Right?
What do you guys think? I’m personally trying to contain my excitement until there’s a confirmation, but having read these characters (and LOVED them in the Activision-helmed Marvel games)… I seriously can’t wait. Sound off in the comments, true believers!
