Registration Closes Soon For the Geekiest GiSHWHES Ever

It seems like just yesterday that details for the fifth annual GishWHes (not a typo, check out the amendment on Commandment #3!) were announced and gishers from around the world (with a little push from Misha Collins) temporarily broke our website with love. (We still have no idea where that video of Misha wrestling a crocodile naked wandered off to…) Now registration closes in just a couple days for what’s shaping up to be the geekiest Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen, and there’s not much time left to get in on the madness.

If you weren’t convinced by my 7.5 reasons to register (or even if you were!) for this life-changing week of mayhem, creativity, charity, and fun, Misha’s latest efforts to bring this year’s item list up to a whole new level with contributions from lots of fandom favorites will do the trick.

There’s always been a (super)natural element of fandom geekiness built into the DNA of GishwheS thanks to our fearless, kale-full leader Misha Collins. Past hunt items have involved everything from Skittles portraits of Jensen Ackles to barnyard animals in Supernatural cosplay. How could he possibly top that, you ask? Check it out:

For months, Misha has been recruiting more of our favs to contribute, such as author and Vlogbrother John Green, his wife Sarah Green, and their web series, The Art Assignment. Yesterday Misha tweeted wishes of luck on the Paper Towns premiere by throwing the Nerdfighter hand sign, which had us (and John!) freaking out.

Star Trek‘s orignal Captain Kirk, William Shatner, played on a GiSHwhes team last year, so naturally he saw Misha’s photo and it lead to the moment Nerdfighteria has been waiting for:

John confirmed its Star Trek origins (then freaked out some more, naturally) and everything has come full circle. That’s the magic of GishWhes!

Misha has reached out asking many others to contribute items to the hunt list, including past gisher Orlando Jones, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, John Barrowman, Chris Hardwick, Felicia Day, Bobak Ferdowsi, Justin Guarini, Timothy Omundson, Kim Rhodes, and plenty more. William Shatner even virtually introduced Misha to Carrie Fisher to help things along.

As of the publishing of this article, the official countdown clock gives two days and 17 hours until registration closes for 2015. This year’s hunt takes place August 1-8 with teams of 15 gishers from all over the world. Start a team, join a team (here‘s a bunch of teams looking for members), or register as an individual. Once registration ends, the GISHBOT will get to work combining partial teams and individuals into teams of exactly 15. Instant new friends!

As a two-going-on-three time gisher, I can’t wait to find out what we’re in for this year. If you’re considering giSHwhes for the first time, I can guarantee that you’re in for a weird, wonderful week that will inspire creativity, kindness, bravery, and provide a new perspective. I’ll be back with an advice post closer to the hunt. Good luck, Happy Gishing, and I hope to see your smiling faces in the Hall of Fame!

Bonus Fun: In case you missed it, Misha and the Dinomite went jogging at San Diego Comic-Con with their security detail.

Extra Bonus Fun: If you’ve got a little time and curiosity, there is a GISHwhes customer support line at (310) 694-5844. It’s mostly an abnosome phone tree of ridiculousness, but Misha did at one point forward calls from it to his phone to talk to Gishers, so it’s possible he randomly will again.

Extra Extra Bonus Fun: This year the hunt begins on Saturday, August 1, right in the middle of GeekyCon weekend in Orlando, FL. If you’re gishing from GeekyCon this year, I will be hosting a GiSHwhes meetup Thursday, July 30, at 3:00pm, and I’d love to see you there! Come meet other geeky gishers, share advice, memories, and dare to imagine what abnosomeness is coming our way. (Check the schedule for location and any last minute changes.)
