And the promo images for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child keep on coming. Hot on the heels of yesterday’s thrilling reveal of the Potter family and ahead of the play’s first preview next week, we have been graced with the first images of Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Rose Granger-Weasley.
Just as yesterday’s news revealed the casting of Albus Severus Potter for the first time, so does this announcement with Rose. The young character will be portrayed by Cherrelle Skeete, who has previously acted in productions of The Lion King and Wind in the Willows. She’s also appeared on the BBC series Call the Midwife.
We’ll start with Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley, whose love for stripes and the color orange has carried through from the films to the play. According to Thornley, they “had to make it look as though he doesn’t really care what he wears”, which seems to fit Ron to a tee.
Noma Dumezweni is also channeling a lot of Hermione-esque energy in her shot. Her deep blue robes are very befitting of her position: by this time, Hermione would have become the Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. While Dumezweni spoke about the feeling of putting on the costume for the first time, J.K. Rowling stated that the actress “gets Hermione inside out”.
Cherrelle Skeete is definitely the star of this announcement, however. Her Rose looks like she’d be top of the class, but with a cheeky Weasley streak. Interestingly, we may be seeing a peek of Rose’s House loyalty as well. In yesterday’s images, Albus’s robes were predictably generic, but it’s clear that Rose has a gold or yellow stripe on her sweater. Because we don’t know much about the new uniform designs, we don’t want to extrapolate too much. But, it seems like Rose could be in either Hufflepuff or Gryffindor at this point. For now, the speculation continues!
Rose and Albus start Hogwarts in the year the play is set, which is perhaps why we’ve seen portraits of them first. It seems likely that in the coming days, we’ll get our first glimpse of their siblings Lily Luna Potter, James Sirius Potter, and Hugo Granger-Weasley.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child begins previews at London’s Palace Theatre June 7, and officially premieres on July 30.
