Exciting news for all Marvel fans out there! ABC has officially renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a second season. The show has had unstable ratings, so this announcement is a relief for all fans out there.
But that’s not all for Marvel’s exploits into TV-land! Not only will ABC be airing the second series of S.H.I.E.L.D. next season, they will be expanding their behind-the-scenes look at the superhero universe with a new show entitled Agent Carter. Agent Carter will follow Peggy Carter, the highly skilled agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve who becomes Captain America’s love interest in the Captain America movies. The show will take place in Agent Carter’s era, after World War II. According to Deadline.com:
It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark, all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers.
Actress Hayley Atwell has previously described her character of Peggy as someone who “can do everything Captain America can do, but backwards and in high heels. She’s an English soldier through and through, although she always looks fabulous. She might stand there with a machine-gun shooting Nazis, but she’s obviously gone to the loo beforehand and applied a bit of lipstick. She doesn’t need to be rescued.” Sounds like Agent Carter will add to the (sadly) short list of shows on television that feature awesome butt-kicking female protagonists.
By adding a second show to their roster, Marvel is taking a step towards leveling the playing field with D.C. who will be tripling their show count next season: Arrow will be joined by the new series Gotham and The Flash.
