Lizzie Bennet Diaries #93: Charlotte is back!

Contributor

Off-You-Tube Happenings this weekend: Charlotte tweeted that she was going back home for a mini-vacation (which we already knew from the preview video). Maria Lu confirmed that she was back.

And the big news: The Official Twitter and Tumblr accounts confirmed that the LBD will be a total of 100 episodes long, which means we have only 8 more episodes (including today’s) to go (*sob*), which also means they have a lot to wrap up in 8 episodes. According to my reckoning, we still need to see:

  • Lizzie finding out that it was Darcy that saved Lydia.
  • Caroline explain herself (she never did in the book, but this Caroline has been more active, inserting herself in Hunsford to figure out what’s in the letter, for example). I’m feeling more and more like Caroline might be the “Lady Catherine” moment, where Lizzie almost but not quite admits that she cares for Darcy. In the modern world, Lady Catherine showing up to berate Lizzie on camera does not make sense, but a vengeful Caroline? Makes perfect sense. We still don’t know exactly what Caroline thought Jane did at the party, either, which I think they need to explain.
  • What Gigi meant by maybe having to move.
  • Darcy show up again.
  • Lydia show up again, more like her happy, chipper self– but not quite so carefree. In many ways, Lydia’s story here more resembles Marianne Dashwood’s (from Sense and Sensibility). I hope to see her again, as a more mature, more serious, but still optimistic, Lydia.
  • The “Second Proposal.”
  • A “happily ever after” scene. If there’s one fault the 1995 BBC P&P has, it’s that it ended too quickly. I always have to go read the last few chapters, where Lizzy and Darcy happily discuss what went before, to be fully satisfied. I need the same thing here. A good-bye video, with both of them smiling and laughing, totally comfortable in each other’s company for the very first time.

So. Do we think we’ll finally get the revelation we’ve been waiting for with Charlotte’s return? Let’s find out!

Hey! It’s the long-awaited force-Lizzie-to-discuss-Darcy episode! And it went– about like I expected. Lizzie knows that Darcy (and Gigi, and who knows who else) watches, or might watch, her videos, and so is unwilling to really talk about it. But we do get the feeling that she thinks Darcy doesn’t care for her any more, that there’s little likelihood that they’ll meet again, and that they’re not “friends.”  This implies that if Darcy wants Lizzie, he’s going to have to make the first move. Notice, however, that while she won’t admit that her feelings have changed, she never out and out says “I still don’t like him.” Seeing this video might be the Lady-Catherine-esque nudge Darcy needs to try again.

The most interesting thing I’m taking away from this, though, is that Charlotte is going to be here for the next month, which means she’ll be here for the end game. Which is SO AWESOME! I wonder if Collins and Collins’s “exciting new hires” have anything to do with Gigi needing to move? Maybe C&C and Pemberley are partnering up on Domino? Hmm.

I wonder just which videos Lizzie has been rewatching? ;)

ETA: I can’t believe I didn’t notice– Lydia’s in the next vid! PLEASE say we get the reveal! PLEASE!

So much sass. So little admitting of feelings. I expected the plot to move a little bit more in this one, and I’m a bit disappointed that it didn’t, but MAN, is Charlotte awesome.

Also, “William Darcy is a force of nature. You don’t just call him” might be my favourite line so far, closely followed by Charlotte’s “Chemistry? Heat? Tension?” =)

  • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

Wow. You go, Charlotte! That was awesome! (And needed to be said).
Unless Gigi has also taken a Wi-Fi-free trip to Fiji I want to see some explanation why she has not yet ducktaped Darcy to a chair, made him watch the video and then have him call Lizzie.
We’re getting all these mysterious mentions of business opportunities/moving/new hires/etc. Is it too much to suspect a connection between Pemberley Digital’s endeavors and Charlotte’s cryptic hints?

  • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

I am just waiting for Team Figi tweets any minute now. They can’t really let that pass without at least commenting on it, can they?
Also, why does Lizzie follow Ricky Collins on twitter but unfollowed Pemberley Digital?! I know she had to for the story to work but still!!!
I never expected Lizzie to put this much of a conversation about Darcy up on her vlog unedited. She didn’t say “Yes, my feelings have changed.”, but everything else was pretty straight forward. She said, she couldn’t call him, not that she didn’t want to and she blamed their lack of contact on him not getting in touch with her. She didn’t contradict anything that Charlotte said (Heat, tension, chemistry), nor did she offer an alternative choice of words. She kept on talking thereby accepting it as part of her sentence. I think Darcy/Gigi/Fitz/everyone else has seen enough of Lizzie’s vlogs to know how to interpret all of that.

    • P

      gigi just ‘liked’ it…

  • Aisling Greene

I love Charlotte, she always tells it like it is…
I didn’t expect much more plot points in this episode but I want Darcy to come bursting in now!

  • laura

    Just a few notes:
    1) this is the modern version of the Lady Catherine scene, that’s quite obvious… Very well done, guys, great way to make it believable nowadays!
    2) I bet that in the next video Lydia will tell Lizzie what Darcy did to save her. She’s been knowing for some time and keeping quiet because she saw that Darcy didn’t want Lizzie to know, but know that it starts being clear that there still could be a future for Lizzie and Darcy, Lydia most certainly feels the need to share that secret, so she’ll tell Lizzie to watch Pemberley’s videos.
    3) I also bet that we’ll see a lot of team FiGi’s tweets in the next few days!
    4) What is it with Charlotte and MrCollins’ private life? Did they secretly start dating?

    • Tiffanie Ing

Interesting. I disagree that this is the modern version of the Lady Catherine scene. I get why you’re saying that, but I really feel like there needs to be an outside source who is NOT pushing for Lizzie and Darcy together to come in and say that stuff to Lizzie. It’s one thing for Charlotte to needle her, it’s a whole other thing for someone like Catherine de Bourgh or Caroline to do so. I really believe that Lizzie needs to defend herself against ANY attack to her character so that Darcy gets the message…

      • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

I agree. I also think that this was Lizzie’s admission that she likes Darcy BEFORE we find out that Darcy took down the website. Basically they had to get this on video, so noone can say afterwards that Lizzie feels an obligation to like Darcy now.
There’s still 7 more episodes, so I am still hoping for a CDB-confrontation in some shape or form.

        • Wahlee

I’m with you. While this *could* be the Lady Catherine-ish scene, I’m hoping for more. I’d equate this more to the scene in the 1995 BBC adaptation, which wasn’t in the book, where Lizzy and Jane are talking after they find out that Lydia’s been found and is going to get married. Lizzy laments that she ever told Mr. Darcy about Lydia’s elopement and Jane asks why Lizzy even cares, since she never sought his love or accepted it when he offered it. And Lizzy replies that she doesn’t know, but that she can’t bear to think that he’s alive in the world and thinking ill of her.

I really think Caroline will come and confront Lizzie. Her not being on good terms with Lizzie doesn’t mean much, since we already have evidence of her butting in where she’s not wanted– when she traveled (apparently) from LA to Hunsford to try to wheedle the info from Darcy’s letter out of Lizzie. She’s irrational enough to think it might actually work to warn Lizzie away.

I do think, however, that Lizzie said enough in this episode to spur Darcy to visit again, if he has a good enough excuse.

          • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

I was actually a strong supporter of the theory that Caroline will confront Lizzie instead of CDB. The reason I’m having doubts now is that we have already solved the Jane/Bing storyline and they’ve had their happy end. We’ll see what’ll happen, but by insulting Lizzie and her family Caroline would now also insult Jane and in extension of that her own brother. (with whom she probably has a rocky relationship already after recent events – not to mention that she knows he might be watching the videos as well) They might find a way to still do it that way, but it would just feel a little off. Charlotte made some weird references to Mr. Collins, so he could still be the one to show up unexpectedly and basically just repeat whatever Catherine de Bourgh might have said to him in an earlier conversation (although that would not be a very heated argument). And I wouldn’t mind just seeing the costume theater version of an off-screen confrontation with CDB herself either. I could imagine Lizzie finding the whole thing so ridiculous that she has to reenact it for the camera. She’d probably have posted the video before she realizes what she’s implying in that exchange regarding her feelings to Darcy.

            • Tiffanie Ing

Actually, you’re right that Caroline might not be the one to do the confronting because the Jane/Bing thing has already been concluded. That was always her main objection, and you and Laura are both right in saying that she may not want to embarrass herself more.

I think there will be a CDB confrontation of some sort. It’s a big part of the book, especially since it’s only after that that Mr. Bennet gets the letter from Collins saying how preposterous it is that Darcy could be in love with Elizabeth. Elizabeth is basically made to eat her own words about Darcy about five times in the book. Every possible obstacle to her love for him has to be removed before they’re united.

In this version, that might not be the case, what with the videos and the fact that Darcy will probably be watching. I agree with Wahlee, who thinks that this scene was similar to the 1995 adaptation with Jane and Lizzy talking about Lizzy’s feelings. I still hope for a CDB confrontation, because it’s explosive, and awesome, and if nothing else. I really want to see Ashley Clements do her hilarious imitation with the stuffed dog again.

Maybe Fitz will deliver the message? =P

              • Wahlee

Caroline may not have liked Bing/Jane, but I’m pretty sure her motivation goes deeper than that– she has Designs on Darcy. And that storyline has definitely *not* been resolved.

                • http://twitter.com/BrynThousand Bryn Thousand

I’m going to jump on the CDB as an entirely separate event-train. Lizzie went as far as to create a costume theater character for her. Though the LBD is a video blog we still need to think of this as an interpretation of an overall story. The CDB representation if not brought back later in the narrative would be:
                  A) a red herring
                  B) poor writing
I don’t think the LBD team is guilty of the second. CDB will not be on camera because as far as we know they never cast anyone in that role. But a costume theater is feasible.

Also, if that scene is performed by a different character it changes the meaning entirely. Aside from reinforcing Lizzie & Darcy’s feelings it also provides a few more plot points:
Lizzie is a dynamic character. She has grown up beyond her original prejudices. It is also a further foil or test towards them getting together… but yea..

              • laura

It CAN’T be Fitz to deliver that message (IF there is a message to deliver): he’s totally pro-Dizzie! :)

      • laura

I understand what you’re saying, but I still disagree..
How on earth would Catherine de Bourgh go to Lizzie’s house and agree to appear on her videos?
And the same for Caroline: she isn’t on good terms with Lizzie, I really think it’s not realistic that she goes to Lizzie’s town just to talk her out of contacting Darcy.. Plus, she’s perfectly aware that she has already humiliated herself in the past towards the internet and towards Bing and Darcy: as proud as she is, I don’t think she would humiliate herself again just to do something so stupid.

        • laura

And, also, the story does not need another intervention: Lady Catherine’s visit was helpful to the story in the way that it gave Darcy hope and it pushed him to go see Lizzie again.
This video is on the internet: it is already enough as a nod to “force of nature”-William Darcy! :) I don’t think he would ignore this video and need another to decide to do something: I mean, there’s also team FiGi to encourage him!!!
By the way: is this the first time that Lizzie calls Darcy by his first name? <3

          • laura

Sorry, I just realized that I wrote a couple of weird expressions: it’s not that I can’t write, it’s just because english is not my first language.. :)

          • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

But wouldn’t the timing be off? The CDB-confrontation is the last thing that happens before Darcy comes back to speak to Lizzie. But we still have seven episodes to go. So if this was the CDB-alternative, wouldn’t Darcy have to hop on a plane right now? But Lizzie still has to find out about it having been Darcy who helped her family. I’d just really assume that Darcy won’t show up again until the very last episodes. I don’t necessarily disagree with you, it would be completely possible to skip the CDB confrontation thanks to the vlogs, but I’m just trying to figure out the timeline if what you are saying is right.

            • laura

Good point, but I think it’s possible that they arrange it to make it work: William Darcy is a busy businessman and recently he already neglected his company for a couple of weeks to seek Wickham out, so probably he can’t just hop on a plane right away, he could have to take care of some business..

So in video 94 there’s probably just Lydia showing Lizzie Pemberley’s videos..

Then in 95 Lizzie’s reaction and maybe Darcy’s arrival. When they meet they don’t just confess their love to each other right away, there has to be some awkward moment between the two of them..

And there’s still a lot that needs to be explained, in addition to the Dizzie storyline: at least Gigi’s future (the moving thing), then maybe Charlotte will appear again and explain the new Collins&Collins thing, then maybe we’ll have a newly happy Lydia to dedicate some time to.

I believe video number 100 will be Lizzie and Charlotte deciding to end the video blog- after all they started it together, they have to end it together, so maybe video 99 will be the Lizzie and Darcy talk that Emily talks about at the end of the post..

You see: this doesn’t leave that much out: are 96, 97, 98 too much for Darcy’s awkwardness, Lizzie’s reaction, Gigi, Lydia, Charlotte, Darcy’s second proposal, a little bit of Mama Bennet?

Of course I may be wrong, but to me this timeline could make sense.. :)

          • http://twitter.com/theitgirl theitgirl

No, she calls him William Darcy a lot in the videos.

  • http://twitter.com/theitgirl theitgirl

why does the headline say episode #92, charlotte is back, but it’s listed as 93 on the youtube?

    • Wahlee

      Because I can’t type. :P Fixed!

  • http://twitter.com/imarielle Arielle

Ugh I’m still frustrated that the Darcy reveal hasn’t happened yet, but I guess Lizzie needed to be confronted about her feelings for him first. I had always thought it would have been Jane who brought it up, but I’m glad it was Charlotte!

Also I just saw that Gigi “liked” Lizzie’s new video. Does this mean she’s going to persuade her big bro to call up Lizzie. I mean we all know he is still in love with her and if he saw that video, there is no way he could let her go on thinking he doesn’t have feelings for her any more right? It would be just the push he needs to confess it all.

My predictions: (I can see this going a few ways)

1)Thursday, we either get the reveal from Lydia, about how it was Darcy, then Darcy calls/shows up at the end and we’re left hanging until Monday (personally I don’t see this one happening because I don’t think Lydia would have kept something like this to herself/I don’t think Lydia is the one who finds out first, I don’t care what happened in the book, it just doesn’t fit IMO)

    2) Darcy calls in the middle of Lizzie and Lydia recording and confesses everything (off screen because I feel like that’s how it would go), Lizzie then returns and tells Lydia it was Darcy and we’re left hanging until the next video where hopefully Darcy shows up and we really get some answers

    3) same as 2 but instead of Darcy confessing over the phone, he just calls to say they need to talk and that he is coming to visit and so we have to wait until next week for answers

    4) Darcy shows up unannounced on Thursday in the middle of Lizzie and Lydia recording and things get good!

I’m hoping for #4 because 1) I want to see some Dizzie again and 2) with so few videos left, they don’t really have a lot of time to dilly dally around it any more and it seems like they still have so much to do, but this has to happen first!

    • laura

Honestly I think number 1 is the most plausible one.
In any case, for the second proposal we have to wait a few videos… I’m sure it’s not going to happen before video 98-99..

  • laura

Guys, Gigi and Mary followed each other… What’s going on? I’m really clueless, unless it means that they are Collins&Collins’s two new hires..
    https://twitter.com/ggdarcy/following
    https://twitter.com/TheMaryBennet/following

I mean, why would Gigi follow Mary otherwise? If it was for a Dizzie thing she would have followed Lydia instead.. Or maybe Mary is the one who found out about what Darcy did to save Lydia and she followed Gigi first to keep in touch? But, then, why Gigi and not directly Pemberley Digital?

    Any idea?

    • http://twitter.com/imarielle Arielle

So far, the two reasons you mentioned are the only possible explanations I can think of for the two of them following each other. I considered Mary being the one to find out about Darcy, but I don’t really see that being very likely. It is much more likely she was also hired by C&C. After all, we don’t really know much about her other than what we got from Lydia’s videos, which wasn’t much.

      • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

I didn’t even think of that. I figured that maybe Lydia ends up being the one to tell Lizzie that it was Darcy (I don’t know how many variations of that sentence I have already written and they’ve always ended up being canonballed). And because Lydia wasn’t allowed to tell anyone she of course told Mary, who got curious and found Gigi on twitter.

        • http://twitter.com/BrynThousand Bryn Thousand

Could Maria be the other hire? It’s totally random, but why is that character posting so much on twitter? Did she do that early on? I don’t think I followed the twitters until August.

        • laura

I don’t know, it seems a bit complicated… Or, at the same time, too easy..

      • laura

Yeah, it doesn’t really make sense that Mary finds out about Darcy because she lives quite far from the Bennets and is never in Lizzie’s videos..
Anyway, why are they putting so much things in it? Aren’t there already enpugh things yet to happen?? Like DIZZIE? :)
