Firstly, Disney is officially planning a live-action version of their 1989 animated hit The Little Mermaid (yes, Universal Pictures and Working Title are also working on their own adaptation). Secondly, and more importantly, Lin-Manuel Miranda is attached to the Disney project co-writing the music alongside songwriter Alan Menken and co-producing with Marc Platt.
Both Miranda and Menken have created iconic music and won a bevy of awards for their work in the past, the latter even scoring the original The Little Mermaid (which netted him two Oscars). Together, they’ll form a superteam of wonder, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store. Moreover, the pair will be developing original work for the film to accompany some of the pre-existing songs we know and love from the original.
Menken, who has previously scored Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, and Aladdin, will also score new pieces in next year’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake. Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics for In the Heights and is the auteur behind the sensational Hamilton, is also contributing music to Disney’s fall release Moana.
It remains to be seen who Universal and Working Title will nab for their own live-action version, but chances are they can’t top this level of musical talent. Currently attached to this adaptation is Chloe Grace Moretz as Ariel with Rebecca Thomas directing and Richard Curtis writing the final script. Disney’s remake has yet to announce any further cast or crew for the project.
