Justice League Character Rumors Starting to Surface

We’re launching into 2013 with some fresh rumors surrounding the Justice League film, currently set for a 2015 release. SuperHeroHype is following up its speculation of the villain and plot for the superhero team-up with the rumored  roster/characterization buzz that’s currently going around:

Superman is essentially the same character from Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder is consulting regarding the writing of the character.
Batman: The strategist of the group. Batman doesn’t really want to be involved with these super powered beings he considers too powerful. Easily the most complex written.
Wonder Woman: She has only been in man’s world a few short months. The Wonder Woman script Michael Goldenberg is developing will be set before the Justice League movie.
Green Lantern: Will be Ryan Reynold’s character from the Green Lantern movie, but will be freshly written with a more serious tone.
Flash: The most popular hero in civilian eyes who loves media attention, but when called upon is very serious.
Martian Manhunter: Alien who has lived on Earth in secret for over a hundred years who has knowledge of Darkseid and his reign.
Aquaman: Will be the King of Atlantis who has a key role in the film.
• There will also be a heavy military presence in the film which in future rewrites could include characters featured in Man of Steel or even Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett) of which neither are included in the first draft.
• Alfred Pennyworth is in the film in a minor appearance.
• Lois Lane is also in the film in a cameo.
• Darkseid’s Elite will be featured who go up against the Justice League early on in the film.

This seems to assume a lot, not the least of which is a hope for the success of the upcoming Man of Steel. And really, there’s not a lot of surprise here considering these guys are your standard JL roster. I mean… Hawkman/Hawkgirl or Cyborg would have been a little shocking. And really, most of the cauterization here isn’t a shock either. Batman is always a strategist and very openly mistrusts all of the non-humans in the group. Heck, that’s the whole premise for JLA: Tower of Babel - which itself became the animated film Justice League: Doom.

What’s interesting about these rumors is where the characters are placed in their timeline. Diana is fresh out of Themyscira/Paradise Island/the Amazon Community, Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern gets a little more grounded, Supe is still new to the game, and Batman is… well, Batman. Everything here leads to what can be understood as the essential dynamic of the JL that people my age haave come to know and love through the various animated series and animated films. It’s a rich one, and it works. My biggest fear, honestly, is that they try to do anything different. I am very much of the opinion that the JL is very different from The Avengers, and the folks at WB would do well to not try to emulate.

Moral of the story? Firmly in the rumor column, but so far the JL movie seems on track to not be too wacky.  Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is doing the script, so we’ll just see how things fall out. Stay tuned for the news as it comes in!
