J.K. Rowling’s Screenwriting Debut: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” Launches New Film Series

Contributor

This morning, Warner Bros. announced that our beloved J.K. Rowling will make her screenwriting debut with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The film will be inspired by the textbook penned by Rowling under pseudonym Newt Scamander for the Comic Relief Charity in 2001.

Rowling posted the following comment on her Facebook page:

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

Warner Bros. also released the little tidbit of possibly interesting information that this screenplay will be the first in a planned FILM SERIES:

Warner Bros. Entertainment today announced an expanded creative partnership with world-renowned, best-selling author J.K. Rowling. At the center of the partnership is a new film series from Rowling’s world of witches and wizards, inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the adventures of the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander. The announcement was made by Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will be an original story and will mark Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is planned as the first picture in a new film series. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

“We are incredibly honored that Jo has chosen to partner with Warner Bros. on this exciting new exploration of the world of wizardry which has been tremendously successful across all of our businesses,” said Tsujihara. “She is an extraordinary writer, who ignited a reading revolution around the world, which then became an unprecedented film phenomenon. We know that audiences will be as excited as we are to see what her brilliant and boundless imagination conjures up for us.”

Insert screaming fans here. We’re all aflutter here at LeakyNews, and some of us might be crying a little (hint: it’s me). Will we see Quidditch Through the Ages next? What about the Many Adventures of Gilderoy Lockhart? Oh the possibilities! Leave your thoughts and comments below! And if you’re dying for more, you can speculate with us as we try to make predictions for the film!

We don’t have nearly enough information to cast this film, but we’ve tried anyway. Check out our list of candidates to play the role of Newt Scamander.

Not only are we getting a movie penned by JKR, but it’s going to be period. New York in the early 1900s. This has the potential to be beyond cool.

    He’s a Hufflepuff!

Also, aside from how excited I am for this, I’m excited for what this could mean for future. The thought of the wizarding world being expanded on, outside of Harry’s perspective…

And it’s a movie without a prior story so we won’t be missing anything! And it’s being written by Jo herself! I will be surprised if this is not the best movie in the wizarding world.

    • Saz

OMG We’re GETTING A MOVIE ABOUT A HUFFLEPUFF. Okay, now I can die happy.

      EVERYTHING IS CANON

    • Mary Ann Borg

It will START in New York. I think we will be going around the world with Newt Scamander to hunt for them in their natural global habitat.

  • Jane

    So happy!!

  • obsessivegleekypotterhead

Can we have “Hogwarts: A History”? PRETTY PLEASE!

    • The Walrus

That would be a horrible movie.

      • Ryan

Not necessarily, the movie could be the start of the wizard world and how it turned into what it is today. I would broaden the movie to not just Hogwarts because there is so much we don’t know about their world.

  • emmybm15

OH MY FRICKING GOSH! YAY! *thinking* please do The tales of Beedle the bard next, please to The tales of Beedle the bard next. Preferably in the same style as it was in Harry Potter and The Deathly hallows part 2. :D <3

  • Tricia

Oh my Rowling, I am so excited for this. Especially about it being “the first picture in a new film series”. What does this mean?
Also I always wanted something from the perspective of someone from a different house. Yeay Hufflepuff!

  • Harriet

Early history if Dumbledore would be cool too!

  • Caitlin McKS

This is beautiful… this is glorious. I can’t.

Though, if she made a movie of the adventures of Gilderoy, I would love to see those adventures played out by the people whose memories he stole.

  • Chuck Jones

    ‘Will start in New York’
No! That means no Hogwarts or Ministry of Magic :(

  • Saz

I need to immediately head to Tumblr and cry and flail and fangirl and die and sqee.

Voldemort’s past is pretty interesting too. And Dumbledore’s! There’s so much I’d like to see T_T Why can’t the books last forever??

  • Senilis

One of the things I’ve always loved about the Harry Potter Universe is the magical creatures featured in the stories. Reading this made me very anxious and excited for this! I could hardly wait!!!

  • liz

it would be so cute if they made little kids cartoons out of beetle’s stories!

  • liz

oh my god…hes hufflepuff…does this mean we will finally see the elusive hufflepuff house common room?

  • Evelyn

Thinking ahead but I really hope we see cameos from Dumbledore and even an adult Luna in an epilogue sequence as she did marry his grandson!!!!

    • David Stoddard

I was hoping for this as well

  • Dan

um…how could you do ‘the many adventures of Gilderoy Lockhart’…when he didn’t have any adventures..

  • Mowskientompova

Just this mean the possibility of seeing a Lethifold? *shivers*

  • Phil Boswell

I’m really rather hoping they can sneak in a mention of Quodpot while they’re in America ;-)

  • Edward

    Are they auditoning?

  • Mathew W

I would think it would be very interesting to make Hogwarts a History. I want to see GOdric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuf, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin come to life, how they came about to build hogwarts, S. Slythernin’s separation from Hogwarts, and how me managed to build the Chamer of Secrets(house elf enslavement anyone??), as well as other interesting things from the Medieval wizarding period, etc, etc, etc. This will be awesome! I can’t wait! :)
