The count keeps rising on familiar Marvel faces we’re excited to see back for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hayley Atwell has confirmed she will reprise her role as Agent Peggy Carter in the film.
She has an evening of partying with Joss Whedon to thank for making it happen. As Atwell describes it:
“We went out drinking one night and he was like, ‘You know, it would be great to write something for you. And I was like, ‘Yes, Joss, it would! It would be amazing!’”
This isn’t Joss Whedon’s first attempt at featuring Peggy Carter, who first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. Whedon had originally planned a non-flashback scene in The Avengers for Steve Rogers and Peggy that ultimately was cut. A version of that scene was reimagined for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in which Steve and Peggy reconnected on screen in the present day.
It’s unclear if Atwell’s appearance in Age of Ultron will be set in flashbacks, present day with aging make up as in Winter Soldier, or both. (Both, please!)
With her ABC series Agent Carter premiering in January 2015 during Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s mid-season hiatus, the appearance will certainly be beneficial in further uniting the crossover of the cinematic and television aspects of the shared Marvel universe. No word yet on if there will be a direct lead in from the series to Atwell’s role in the film.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to hit theaters May 1, 2015.
