Star Wars: The Force Awakens was chock-full of classic fan favorite characters like Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia, but it also was a great movie for fresh faces. Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) all left their marks on the franchise. One character in particular, Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma, sure caught a lot of attention despite not having too much screen time, and perhaps even because of it. Phasma was pushed heavily in marketing and her character design won her spot as a fan favorite before the movie premiered. Her comparatively minor role in The Force Awkakens had fans clamoring for more, and it looks like our hopes are coming true.
At Saturday evening’s SAG Award red carpet the actress revealed to reporters from People that she is, in fact, returning for Episode VIII, which is wonderful news for fans who had gone into The Force Awakens expecting her to have a much bigger part in the story. It’s especially exciting for Christie herself, who has made it no secret that she campaigned hard to get her part in the film:
I was very overexcited. I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time. And then I was delighted when J.J Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man.
We can only hope that Captain Phasma gets more screen time in the upcoming film, perhaps with information on how she came to be a part of the First Order.
Star Wars Episode VIII hits theaters December 2017.
