Guillermo del Toro Has Plans for a ‘Pacific Rim’ Trilogy

We’re already excited enough for Pacific Rim 2, which director Guillermo del Toro has announced for April 7, 2017, but now we might have reason to look forward to a Pacific Rim 3 as well. The screenplay for the second film is in the works, and del Toro has previously revealed that he will focus the movie on digging deeper into the concept of the Drift and the portal that allows Kaiju to enter our world.

In del Toro’s most recent interview with Collider, the director teases that the first draft of the film is complete:

We are going to spend another 4-5 months on the screenplay before we start pre-production. We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year.

Pacific Rim 2 is expected to be very different from the first film, with new characters and a new storyline. Del Toro mentions that the films could stand on their own, and has even announced an animated series to help bridge the gap between the two. While we’re all crossing our fingers that some of our favorite characters like Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and Raleigh Beckett (Charlie Hunnam), as well as the science duo Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) and Newt (Charlie Day) will make it into the second film, del Toro warns us not to get our hopes up:

The direction we’re going is very different from the first. Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies.’ So some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.

He makes it clear that the two sequels will have more in common with each other than the first. While a third film won’t be a reality until the Pacific Rim 2 numbers are in, it’s no surprise that the director has already started thinking about it, as he is well known for keeping extremely busy with new projects.
