Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack goes Platinum

Last week, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn posted to his Facebook that he had been notified that a total of one million physical units (presumably including CDs, vinyl records, and a limited-edition cassette tape) of the soundtrack of the hit Marvel movie, titled Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 1 had been shipped since its release last summer. The official post:

Just heard the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack has shipped over a million units. We are one of only four albums from 2014 to do so (Taylor Swift, SAM SMITH, Pentatonix, and us.). Congratulations and a big THANK YOU to all the bands and musicians involved. Your music has crossed decades to pierce the hearts of people all over the world.

Two days later, it was officially announced that Awesome Mix Vol. 1 had become a certified platinum record. Soon after its initial release in August, the album was #1 on the Billboard 200 charts for two weeks. Consisting entirely of hit songs from past decades that were featured in the film, it was also the first soundtrack in history to reach the #1 spot without a single original track. As Gunn mentioned in his post, it was the fourth album released in 2014 to reach the platinum benchmark, as well as the only soundtrack of the year to do so.
