Disney’s latest megahit (and recent Golden Globe winner for Best Animated Film) Frozen may be headed to Broadway. Walt Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger told Fortune that Disney is looking to adapt the film, based on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Snow Queen, for the stage.
Frozen has proved an incredible financial success for the company as Disney’s biggest box office hit in 20 years. The film has grossed $699 million so far and its soundtrack is the number one album on iTunes and Amazon. Iger noted that Frozen has “franchise potential” for toys, theme park rides, and sequels set in the Frozen world.
So how soon will Elsa and Anna join the casts of The Lion King and Newsies on the Great White Way? Iger wouldn’t give a timeframe. He only confirmed that Disney is in discussions to develop a show, and that these things take time. “We’re not demanding speed,” he said. “We’re demanding excellence.”
