Forget Orcs, This Sting Glows Blue When Unsecured Wi-Fi Is Near

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins comes upon Sting, an Elven sword that suits his small stature and does him well in battling giant spiders and other foes. In The Lord of the Rings, Bilbo passes Sting on to Frodo as he heads out on his quest to destroy the One Ring.

Sting’s handiest feature is its ability to glow blue in the presences of orcs and goblins. While this is exceptionally useful in Middle-earth, who doesn’t want a Sting of their own with real world applications? The team at Spark have made this dream a reality with the creation of WarSting. The sword glows blue when it detects unsecured Wi-Fi networks and allows you to bravely take them on.

With some relatively simple (for the tech savvy) modifications to a toy Sting sword, a few thrusts of the glowing blue blade detects, connects, and generates a message that reads, “[YOUR WI-FI NETWORK] has been vanquished!”

Check it out in action below.

If you’re interested in making a WarSting of your own, all you need is a few parts and these instructions from Spark before you’re prepared to conquer unencrypted networks while on all your unexpected journeys, there and back again.
