It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the first picture of Henry Cavill as Superman from the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!

The picture’s release coincides with USA Today‘s interview with director Zack Synder and comes just days after we got a look at Cavill in his Clark Kent ensemble. The image suggests a darker tone than its predecessor and perhaps offers, what we can only hope, is a glimpse of Gotham City in the background. This makes sense not only because of the film’s obvious inclusion of the Caped Crusader but also because a large part of the clean-cut looking Metropolis was destroyed in Man of Steel.
In the interview, Snyder addresses the new superheroes being added to the film and how their interactions will affect Superman’s perspectives on Earth and the ones he loves. He also mentioned that the Ben Affleck’s Batman will be older and a little more weary than the versions of the character we’ve seen in previous movies.
It’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys.
And while he’s not willing to go too much into the Batman-Superman dynamic in the film, he did reveal that the title was purposefully crafted. In fact, the decision to use a “v” instead of “vs” was his way of keeping it “from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.”
As for Wonder Woman, Snyder admitted he hasn’t filmed any scenes with Gal Gadot yet.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters May 6, 2016.
