If you loved the #setlock tag, get ready for more action. According to Sherlock‘s official Twitter account, production on the show’s fourth series is underway, with filming beginning today. The BBC also confirmed the news.
Not one to simply state the news with good old-fashioned text, co-showrunner and actor Mark Gatiss loomed out of a misty set piece for the show to announce, “We’re back. The game is on.”

His clapperboard reveals that the first episode of series four will be directed by Rachel Talalay with Stuart Biddlecombe serving as Director of Photography. Talalay is the first woman to direct an episode of Sherlock, with episodes of Doctor Who, The Flash, and Supernatural already under her belt.
The BBC’s press release also bears the following hype from Gatiss and Steven Moffat:
Sherlock series four – here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street – and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax…
On the show’s impending series, actor Benedict Cumberbatch said he was ”genuinely thrilled to be back filming Sherlock with all the cast and crew. I can’t wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait… though not for long… And it will be worth it.”
Given our patient and not-so-patient waiting so far, we certainly hope so! Sherlock is likely to return to television screens in early 2017.
