Fantastic Beasts Releases Newt Scamander Featurette, Includes New Footage

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has released a new featurette on the magizoologist Newt Scamander, featuring some new clips and interviews with screenwriter J.K. Rowling and actor Eddie Redmayne.

“My heroes are always people who feel themselves to be set apart, stigmatized, or othered,” Rowling opens. “That’s at the heart of most of what I write and it’s certainly at the heart of this movie.” We see Newt right at home with his creatures, especially a rather heartwarming exchange between himself and a Bowtruckle (which Pottermore has profiled here). However, it’s his interaction with other people that prove to be a bit more of a struggle.

Here, we get a good sense of Newt’s moral and literal character: when his future wife Tina questions him about his American wizarding knowledge, he refers to the US’ “backwards” relationship with the country’s No-Maj population. And, as in all good stories, Newt gets  his turn playing the hero too. When his No-Maj friend Jacob accidentally unlocks Newt’s case full of beasts, the magizoologist finds himself at the center of an adventure that “has implications for the whole Wizarding world.”

Besides shots with Newt, Tina, and Jacob (played by Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, and Dan Fogler respectively), we also get more glimpses of Tina’s sister Queenie (Alison Sudol); Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) official Percival Graves (Colin Farrell); and the President of the MACUSA herself, Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo).

Perhaps this featurette was released at VidCon as part of the mysterious announcement teased earlier this week. Yesterday, an international selection of YouTube creators partnered with Fantastic Beasts for a live Q&A about the movie.

The film hits theaters November 18, 2016.
