Fantastic Beasts‘ presence at San Diego Comic-Con has already gifted us with a stunning new poster but we were thrilled to see that they weren’t done yet.
A wild new trailer gives us a look into the havoc the magical beasts wreak on New York and the No-Maj population in the city in particular.
Wow, there’s a lot to unpack here (and yes that pun is intended).
Starting with the things we already know, there’s Newt and his case, along with the characters we’ve met that come to his aid: Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol), and Jacob (Dan Fogler). We see a house elf that seems to work at MACUSA and some goblins in what looks like a speakeasy-type establishment, so it’s fun to know they are in America too. There are closer looks at MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo) and her amazing headwear, her advisor, auror Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), and a first look at Jon Voight’s character Henry Shaw Sr.
So many fantastic beasts! There are hints at several beasts we don’t actually see from a creature that’s “like a ghost” with “shining white eyes” tunneling under the streets, to one (or more) lighting up below a snowy ice rink. Of the creatures we do see, there’s a blue bug that Pottermore suggests may be a Billywig, a quick glance at a running silver-furred ape-like creature that may be a Demiguise, plus a handful more to speculate on.
While Seraphina is (understandably) concerned about the No-Maj’s potential fearfully reactionary tactics, in delightful contrast we see a lot of No-Maj Jacob’s first experiences with magic. They go from unease and fear (we can’t blame him after a creature jumps out of Newt’s case at him) all the way to proclaiming with delight how he wishes he were a wizard by the end of the trailer.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them hits theaters November 18.
