We have a bunch of fun things coming from our time at LeakyCon regarding The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, including interviews with many of the cast this afternoon, but this tidbit can’t wait. A chance meeting with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries writer and showrunner Bernie Su this afternoon has led to some exclusive news regarding the upcoming novelization of the popular webseries. Although he couldn’t say who would be writing it, he did offer this intriguing information when I asked if the novelization might incorporate some of the transmedia experiences that were so unique to the LBD:
LeakyNews (LN): I’m hoping that the novel might answer some unanswered questions. . .
Bernie Su (BS): Yes.
LN: Like will we find out if Darcy ever apologized to Bing for helping break [Bing and Jane] up, or. . .
BS: Yeah, possibly!
LN: That would be very cool.
BS: The idea is that we’re trying to make it so there’s going to be–there’s the book that can stand alone, the videos that can stand alone and everything like that, but they’re all part of one canon. So, eventually, we have this thing right now called enhanced books, right?
BS: You don’t think there’s going to be a novel that has the videos, that you can read the novel, and get to the video, and then read more novel, and get the next video, and how amazing that experience would be?
LN: That would be really cool.
BS: There you go!
LN: Awesome. Awesome.
BS: So speculate there! Print your story!
LN: Let’s speculate! Thank you very much!
So, my friends. Let’s speculate! How do you think this enhanced novel might work? I think an e-text would be ideal for something like this– a link at the end of each chapter to YouTube, so you could be cruising along on your iPad in the story then immediately be able to go to the web and watch the relevant episode, or view the Twitter conversations between characters on those dates. The mind boggles.
The original webseries really pushed the boundaries of just what a web-based adaptation could be. Looks like they’re trying to push those boundaries even further.
What missing moments would you like to see in the novelization? What do you think the enhancements on the novel will look like? Let us know in the comments!
