Disney and Broadway Take Center Stage at GeekyCon

Everywhere you looked at GeekyCon this year it was nearly guaranteed you’d spot a Broadway or Disney cosplayer, perhaps also sporting plenty of Broadway and Disney badge ribbons. Always popular fandoms at GeekyCon, from meetups to discussions to singalongs, Broadway and Disney programming was plentiful in 2016 too.

Mischief Management’s Sierra Fox and BroadwayCon‘s Artistic Director of Mainstage Programming David Alpert led a GeekyU panel called Broadway 101: Not Just Hamilton. They took us on educational, musical (yes, there were song clips!) journey through the history of musicals.

While it’s true that there’s more than just Hamilton, we have to happily admit that the Hamilton meetup was definitely a lot of fun. In the room where it happened, fans discussed representation and favorite historical inaccuracies, had a “Guns and Ships” rap-off, and showed off some incredible cosplay.

Highlights of the Disney related programming this year included Maxwell Glick’s How2Disney panel and What Would Walt Do? A Discussion of the Ever-Changing Disney Landscape. Panelists Jordan Edwards, Adam Rucker, and David Alpert talked about the evolution of the Disney parks, for better or for worse (verdict: mostly for better!).

Of course, no GeekyCon is complete without some singalongs. Here are some highlights from the Broadway Singalong, featuring several special guests and some amazing cosplayers.

A favorite moment from the Disney Singalong was the inevitable dance party during “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King.”

For an even bigger dose of Broadway fandom, tickets for GeekyCon‘s sister convention BroadwayCon are still available!
