I am not happy to be reporting on this news, rumor though it may only be. The Hollywood Reporter sat down to talk with Showtime head David Nevins about the decision to wrap up Dexter with season 8, and when asked about a possible Dexter spinoff focused on Deborah, he replied:
All options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There’s nothing actively happening, but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there. I won’t rule it out, but I’m not actively planning anything.
At this rate, it would just be milking it. While Deb is certainly an interesting character, it is primarily because of her relationship with Dexter. Take Dex out of the equation, and is there really enough left to go on with? I don’t think so. It is just a rumor, in any case, so it may never happen anyway. So rarely does a spinoff actually work out, as we saw with The Cleveland Show‘s recent and merciful cancellation.
I think these rumors are primarily fueled by the late decision by Showtime to announce the shows ending as well as the fact that the previous season of Dexter, coming off of the disaster that was Season 6, had the highest ratings of the entire series, even higher than Season 3, which is widely lauded as being the high-point of the series.
What do you think, Dexter fans? I love the show as much as anybody, but do you really think a Deborah Morgan spinoff could work? Let me know in the comments!
