CONFIRMED: Shailene Woodley Cast as Hazel in “The Fault in Our Stars”

Moments ago it was announced that Shailene Woodley has been cast as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. As you may recall, we first speculated that Woodley had been cast a little over a month ago.

Speaking to LeakyNews, John Green had this exclusive comment on the casting decision:

“Shailene sent me an email a few weeks ago about the book, and I knew then that she got the book. Her enthusiasm and passion were obvious. But when I saw her audition, I knew that she didn’t just understand the book: she understood Hazel, in deep and almost eerie ways.  I am so grateful and excited.”

An Entertainment Weekly article about the announcement also has a quote from director Josh Boone on the casting decision:

“During our exhaustive search to find Hazel Grace Lancaster, I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses. Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time.  It was like lightning striking.  I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”

Producer Wyck Godfrey weighed in further on the casting decision, while additionally confirming that Shailene Woodley is the first actor to be cast in the film:

“When choosing the writers, director and now our first actor for Fault we’ve gone with the people that have had the strongest, most emotional and insightful connection to the material. Shailene’s love of the book and dedication to the character was evident in not only her pursuit of the role but her delivery of the essence of Hazel in her audition. I have no doubt that she will deliver a Hazel that will floor both fans of the book and those who have yet to be introduced to the transcendent story of The Fault in Our Stars.”

This latest casting news adds to an already impressive resumé for the 21-year -old. Shailene Woodley starred in The Descendants, will star as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and will also play Tris in the upcoming adaptation of Divergent alongside Theo James. No news yet on who will play Augustus Waters but you can read our casting suggestions and comment with your own!

The screenplay for The Fault in Our Stars was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who wrote (500) Days of Summer. Director Josh Boone’s other projects include Stuck in Love, and you can watch the newly released trailer for Stuck in Love at this link.

What a great casting choice! I’m so excited to see what she brings to the character.

  • Alice

She’s going to play Tris and Hazel Grace?! I can’t wait for both of those films! So excited, but nervous too.

  • lollifant

Awesome! Especially because John is so enthousiastic about her, but I’m a tiny bit dissapointed, I wished for some miracle that Mary Kate Wiles would be Hazel…

  • Aisling Greene

I haven’t seen any of her work so I trust John

  • orange

I like that John is so exited about her, so I’m going to trust that she is right for the part. But I hoped for Mary Kate Wiles…

Nooo!!!! Don’t get me wrong, she’s an okay actress but I just don’t see her as Hazel…
Besides I would’ve preferred if they picked actors that aren’t that well known ):
