It’s time to let out a collective sigh of relief. Our favourite scientists are back. Charlie Day’s Newt Geiszler and Burn Gorman’s Hermann Gottlieb are confirmed to return for the Pacific Rim sequel, according to Collider’s recent interview with director Guillermo Del Toro.
On discussing his love for the bickering duo, the director said:
It’s quite a different movie from the first one in that, but I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn.
In the first film, Newt’s impulsiveness and disregard for due scientific process clashed with Hermann’s controlled and precise nature, providing most of the movie’s comic relief and birthing a love-hate relationship of legendary proportions. Initially, Del Toro hinted that several fan favorites would not make it into the subsequent films in the planned trilogy, so this is exciting news.
Del Toro also stated that the sequel would have a time jump of about a few years. Therefore, we can expect to see the future of Jaegers in a Kaiju-free world.
