Total Film interviewed X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner about what other characters she’d like to see come to life. In the video, she confirms that Gambit will be played by Channing Tatum:
Well you know he’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that. He’s got a really good heart, because I know him personally, I did a movie with him. So I think he’ll be great, he’ll be great for Gambit, and he’s a southerner too, he’s not from New Orleans but he is a southerner and he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Gambit will be introduced in 2016′s X-Men: Apocalypse, setting him up for a future stand-alone movie. Current speculation has this spinoff being the “Untitled FOX Marvel Movie” set for July 18, 2018.
Tatum has proven he has both action chops (G.I. Joe) and self-aware humor (21 Jump Street), but will fans accept him as the card-slinging cajun? And can he pull off the accent? Let us know what you think!
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens on May 23rd.
