BREAKING: HBO Renews “Game Of Thrones” For Third Season

LOS ANGELES, April 10, 2012 – Fresh off the heels of the Season Two premier, HBO has approved a third season of Game Of Thrones.

According to early data coming from HBO, Game Of Thrones’ season two premiere has already accumulated a gross audience of 8.3 million viewers, and is on track to easily surpass the season one average of 9.3 million viewers.

According to the official HBO press release, “Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season – and then surpassed them,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.”

Hoo. Also very happy. So now we either get all of Storm of Swords condensed into one 10 episode season (a nigh impossible feat), or we get half of the story and hopefully a 4th season later to finish it up. To be honest, I’m in no rush, but child actors are growing quickly…then again, George R.R. Martin is writing slowly. Sigh. I’m actually extremely curious about what will happen if HBO catches up with and passes George’s story; will they just quit for a few years, or quit for good (leaving the story unfinished and millions of viewers heartbroken), or maybe just make up the rest of the story on their own (resulting in two different finales to the story, if Martin eventually finishes his stuff). It happened with the comic series Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim when they were made into films. Guess we’ll see.

I cannot wait. The books are so amazing and I loved the series when it was just words. HBO has done such a wonderful job of taking GRR Martin’s vision and creating a series around it. According to GRR’s blog, he’s more than happy with the outcome.
