In addition to a new section at Disney World, a slew of new novels, and several new movies being released in the coming years, the Star Wars universe could continue to expand, this time to the small screen.
It’s still all very unofficial, but Entertainment Weekly reported Thursday that at the Television Critics Association’s press tour, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey claimed to be in talks with Lucasfilm about a possible Star Wars TV series.
“The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming…
“It’s all a little bit hush-hush. That company exists under a big shroud of secrecy. If you feel Marvel’s secretive, [Lucasfilm] takes it to a whole other level … [Talks] are ongoing. We don’t have an official timeline yet.”
So while we don’t know if a Star Wars show is a definite possibility, bringing movie universes to television is all the rage nowadays. Marvel has Agents of SHIELD and the Defenders on Netflix, Star Trek has Star Trek: Discovery, DC has half of the CW prime-time lineup as well as shows on NBC and Fox, and X-Men has Legion and Hellfire. Not to mention the loads of cartoon series that air on various networks. Even Divergent is getting into the television game.
Even though a Star Wars is a big enough franchise that a new TV show isn’t necessary to keep its fans interested, it would be a nice addition to keep fans excited between films. Clone Wars and Rebels are solid hits, but a live-action series would be enough of a new change up that it would bring a bigger audience in.
